Experience in Studying Foreign Language
Chinese Tutor.net was started by Simon Laing an American studying and working in Nanjing,
China and working as a part-time English teacher. Together with half a dozen graduate
langauge students and former tutors, we formed the company. Simon Studied French for 6
years in high school and University.
Although we are a small company we feel we can offer a timely and flexible service that is need
to study the difficult language of Chinese.

Chinese Tutor.net was started by Simon Laing an American studying and working in Nanjing,
China and working as a part-time English teacher. Together with half a dozen graduate

How can we be so cheap?
In China outside of Shanghai and Hong Kong the cost of living is very low. Eating out costs
$1-3 per person and rising housing costs are still comparatively low. Nanjing, although a
small city, has a heritage for education including many universities. We work with tutors who
have a range of language skills suit different level students. Some of them are graduate
students working to their masters and Ph. D. Some tutor have day jobs and can work in the
evenings. From experience we have learnt that a good teacher can really make the difference
in learning a difficult language.
Simon Laing, head of Customer Service and a founding partner, was involved in social justice
issues in university, and is sensitive to exploitation issues. The Chinese tutors are paid a
competitive middle class hourly wage. Much of the income goes to Internet search ads and
fees for transferring money
The main reason for making this site was the difficulty in studying Chinese made me feel
there was a business opportunity in helping people learn Chinese.
